With only a few days before his 4 month birthday I figured it was time for Austin to test out real food. According to babycenter.com they can start anytime between 4-6 months if they have doubled their birth weight. When I was at the grocery store last week I picked up some plain Gerber rice cereal and we decided to give it a try. I made it really soupy the first time and he was interested in it, but I am not actually sure if he swallowed any. Over the next few days I made it a little bit thicker and I don't know if he was a fan. He made a few very unpleasant faces and barely swallowed any, but that could have been because he didn't like the texture. I saw that they also sell fruit flavored rice cereal, but I am really trying to stay away from fruit until we try vegetables. Everyone knows that I prefer my sweets over vegetables so I am trying not to pass on that lovely little trait to the little man ;)
My mom got me this book a few months ago and I have been waiting to try it out. http://www.babylovefoods.com/ It is written by Chef Geoff and his wife. Many of you local DC readers may be familiar with Chef Geoff's restaurants in DC and VA. The book is full of homemade baby food recipes. I am not the most elaborate cook, but I figure it can't be too hard to mash up some veggies and fruit and add a few spices. Hopefully by making everything myself I can keep most of his food organic, low in nitrates, and maybe even save a few bucks. I will be sure to post any great recipes that he seems to really like.
In all his glory ha!
I love it...more on the face then in the belly!
