Every morning when I wake up I turn on the Today Show. One morning when I was pregnant I saw a segment on making your own baby food and Chef Geoff's book Baby Love. Ever since that episode I knew it was something I at least wanted to try. Now I am not a Chef by any means, but I can cook the basics and every now and again I will try to make something fancy. Luckily baby food is not fancy, at least at this stage of the game. My mom came over last week to visit Austin and I and we started looking up recipes in the book. He is still very new at solids so we had limited options. We chose to start with pears, butternut squash, bananas, and sweet potatoes. We baked or steamed everything to make it soft (except the bananas), then we cut it into small pieces, and pureed it in the food processor.
After everything was pureed we poured it into the ice cube trays and froze the food overnight. Each cube of fruit/vegetable is one serving at this point because solids are still so new. As time goes on he will eat several cubes at each sitting. I mentioned in Austin's 5 month post that he was rebelling against all solids. At the time I was using Gerber fruits and veggies to see what he liked before I made his homemade food. Well let me tell you things have changed. Ever since he tried the homemade baby food he LOVES food. Maybe it was a coincidence, but I like to tell myself it has something to do with our cooking. I will let you all know if I come across any fun and easy recipes as time goes on.

Glad he likes all of it...he sure was gobbling up the pears after we made them!
ReplyDeleteSee I told you he would warm up to solids...it must be your cooking that did the trick!
